Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) flooring is rapidly growing in popularity worldwide, thanks to its design flexibility, durability and ease of maintenance. But while it’s easier than ever to find LVT that creates your desired aesthetic, not all LVT is created equal. It’s important not to judge the quality of your flooring at face value alone.

To help you select LVT that best suits the unique design and practical requirements of your organization, we’ve created a simple and objective guide to buying Luxury Vinyl Tile flooring.

as possible.

WHAT IS LVT?

Luxury Vinyl Tile is a type of hard flooring typically made up of five distinct layers:

1. Polyurethane coating

2. Wear layer

3. Print film layer

4. Vinyl core

5. Vinyl backing

LVT was originally known as “hot-pressed tile”, which gives a good indication of how it’s made. The layers are fused together under heat and

pressure, to create a strong, durable flooring product with an aesthetic capable of rivalling natural hard flooring like wood or stone.

Recycled Content Many flooring manufacturers use post-consumer recycled content in their LVT, as a way to make their products appear more sustainable. In principle this shouldn’t cause problems, but it introduces an element of the unknown into your flooring.

If the post-recycled content in your LVT cannot be controlled, it’s much harder to be sure that it’s free from damaging chemicals, or know how it will impact the product’s dimensional stability and durability. Unless you know the provenance of the recycled content, there’s no way of knowing what goes into your LVT, and how these added elements will deteriorate over the lifetime of your floor.

For example, low-quality LVT using post-consumer recycled content is likely to contain a lower percentage of PVC than standard. This compromises the dimensional stability of the LVT, meaning the tiles are more prone to curling and shrinking after installation.
