You may be wondering to yourself—what is luxury vinyl, exactly? Luxury vinyl differs from standard vinyl in two main ways – its visual aesthetic and composition of the finished product.
Luxury vinyl plank and luxury vinyl tile are produced in either plank or tile form and have a surface layer that has a very realistic photo image that aims to mimic to both hardwood and ceramic.
The main selling point of luxury vinyl is its ability to simulate natural materials which makes it a great alternative to both hardwood and stone. Additionally, it’s also produced to mimic its natural counterparts in shape, too. Luxury vinyl is either produced as 100% vinyl or a vinyl/limestone composite and those products that are made to look like stone will often contain natural minerals.
Luxury vinyl is comprised of four layers. The top layer is aluminum oxide which prevents scratching and scuffing. Then comes a clear film which will protect against rips and tears. Third is the design layer, which is where visual design comes in. Finally, the backing layer, which is 90% of the product, is what gives luxury vinyl it’s structure and solidity.
